Ghosts must fix a story problem that has been building for three years to maintain the ability for the show to be believable. The series first launched on CBS in 2021, strongly inspired by a BBC series of the same name. While the American Ghosts series is wildly different from its British counterpart, many U.S. Ghosts characters based on the UK version exist, drawing numerous connections between the series, critically acclaimed in their respective nations. If the American series wants to continue to follow the success of its predecessor, there's one detail that it should include moving forward to follow Ghosts UK's example.
In both series, the ghosts can "move on." While the ghosts in the show from various time periods and backstories don't define exactly where they go, the spirits are trapped in their paranormal form in their current afterlife. When they move on, they can finally experience peace. It's supposed to happen when the ghosts reach a certain level of attainable personal growth, and both series portray the phenomena with the spirits getting sucked upward into the sky. In the American series, it's called "getting sucked off." The U.S. series borrowed the storyline and needs to act on it in Ghosts season 4.

Although CBS's Ghosts has mostly ignored an integral part of the show's setup since season 1, season 4's promising new character can fix this.
Sam Has Yet To Successfully Help Any Ghost Be Sucked Off
Rose McIver's Character Says It Is Her Purpose
Heading into the fourth installment of the American Ghosts series, Sam hasn't helped anyone get sucked off. Sam's unique gift to see the people who died in the results from a horrible accident. While it's an upsetting and disturbing development that Sam can see the ghosts at first, she eventually learns to consider it a gift. Eventually, Sam tells Jay that she thinks her purpose is to help the ghosts move on to the proper afterlife, and she wants to help them do that.
The ghosts in the American series call it getting "sucked off" because Trevor Lefkowitz, a recently deceased ghost, knows the slang and thinks it's funny to hear the other characters say it.
Rose McIver's Sam has a profound capacity to care for the people around her, shown by how she considers the ghosts. Sam helps the ghosts watch TV, earn money, and engage in their hobbies, which is more than she would have to do. Sam's motivation to help the ghosts move on to the afterlife conflicts with her desire to enjoy her life with them, despite how overstimulating they can sometimes be. Sam goes out of her way for the spirits in her home because they are like her family.
Ghosts Season 4 Needs To Finally Suck Someone Off
Ghosts Can Follow The British Series' Example
While it's sad to see any of the characters go, CBS Ghosts should suck someone off in season 4. Sam's desire to help the ghosts move on is part of her motivation for staying in the house and continuing to live at Woodstone Estate, and it's an empty promise if she can never do that. The British series ended after five seasons, and while the U.S. version shows no signs of slowing down, ending the series without acting on one of its main storylines would be a disgrace. The possibility of the spirits moving on to the afterlife is imminent.
One of the cholera ghosts, who was dating Stephanie, the attic ghost, got sucked off in Ghosts season 3 but wasn't one of Sam's close connections and didn't have anything to do with her.
What happened to Flower in Ghosts season 3 is the closest the series gets to one of the ghosts moving on. Flower got stuck in a well, with the characters assuming she had moved on in the season 3 opener. However, the other ghosts find Flower in the well near the end of the season. While it was great to have Flower back, Sam could slowly lose morale if she continually fails to help her friends. The series should take note of the British Ghosts series, which had Mary (Katy Wix) move on in season 4.
Which Spirit Can Be Sucked Off In Ghosts Season 4
Ghosts Can Suck Off Crash Or Stephanie
Ghosts season 4 should suck someone off, and it should be someone that Sam has a connection with. Still, it doesn't have to be the most prominent ghost. Ghosts could suck off someone like Crash or Stephanie. Crash is a 1950s greaser ghost who died on the Woodstone Estate after his head was cut off. Ghosts based Crash on Laurence Rickard's Humphrey Ignatius Bone from the BBC series, a beheaded Catholic Tudor nobleman. However, Humphrey has a more robust role in the British series, equal to the other cast members. Crash has taken a backseat in the American version of Ghosts.
Sam's mom, Rachael Harris' Sheryl, moved on after just one conversation with her daughter.
Crash would be the perfect character to suck off because, while he's one of the original characters from season 1, he has a minor role. Still, Sam cares about helping her friends, so Ghosts season 4 would need to give Crash a bit of a storyline before he moves on to make it more meaningful. Alternatively, Ghosts could suck off Stephanie (Odessa A'Zion). While she adds a lot to the series, Stephanie is only awake once a year because she's a teenage ghost. Sam has already helped Stephanie immensely, throwing her a prom in Ghosts season 1, episode 17, "Attic Girl."
Stream Ghosts season 1, episode 17, "Attic Girl," on Paramount+.
While it's sad to think about Ghosts losing one of its own, having one of the characters move on to the afterlife is essential to moving the story forward. Sam said the purpose of her bizarre ability is to help the ghosts move on, and that's an empty purpose if she can never act on it. Sam has already helped all the ghosts evolve, so at least one is due for the real afterlife. After all, Sam's mom, Rachael Harris' Sheryl, moved on after just one conversation with her daughter, having evolved very little.
