Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. I'm grateful that there's a backwater thread like this; where else can you find people to listen like you do?

And now...off to the long weekend.

    Cheers.

            I concur with Marshall.

I, as a retired lawyer, would be unlicensed to render legal advice at this time, but on this occasion I will stretch it to advise that all have a happy, safe Thanksgiving and that you remember on Thanksgiving to keep room to try all the Thanksgiving desserts.

            Felicitations,
            Rob

Good day all! It's late here and I'm tired. I was with my ma at the ear doc. She is ok. Then I looked for a guitar for Anton and on Thursday I will drive to Luebeck, to check this Sigma OM guitar:
                https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/ ... 7-74-24246

I can get it a bit cheaper than the price he wrote and I get a gigbag with the guitar. Looking forwardThe Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum-Last One To Post Wins (1)

I got a little but o' good news this affernoon. I took the D-42LE to the luthier today for a neck reset. He looked at the neck angle and said it is marginal for a reset. With his straight edge and gauge he said best not to do the reset now. It is almost ready for one but not there yet. So that saved me some good money right now.

Other than that we picked up the Honey Baked Ham for the fambly gathering on Thursday and had a nice late lunch at a good Meat and Three restaurant.

That said, I hope all here in this little back water have a memorable and blessed Thanksgiving. As the old hymn says, "Count your many blessings/ name them one by one. . ." .

The Cracker Barrel is slammed. And loud. Inside, there isn’t much in the way of elbow room. There are heaps of people. And I am trying to master the wooden Triangle Peg game.
The object of this game, of course, is simple. Leave the fewest pegs remaining on the triangle as possible. Finish a game with only one peg is left; you are a NASA-level genius. Two pegs; you are moderately clever. Four pegs; your parents are first cousins.
I love Cracker Barrel. But then, I have a long history with this institution. I’ve eaten at Cracker Barrels from Beaverton, Oregon, to Prattville, Alabama. I’ve eaten here on Thanksgiving, the day I graduated college, the morning after my wedding, and the day after my father died. The food suits me.
The overhead music always has steel guitar in it. The people in the giftshop always ask how you’re doing. And if you’re bored, you can always embarrass your wife by buying a Davy Crockett hat and wearing it into the dining room.
Today, an elderly couple is sitting next to me as I fiddle with the peg game. The old man is skinny. She is frail. They are shoulder to shoulder.
The man is wearing a hospital bracelet. His entire lower leg is in a medical brace. His face is bruised purple. There is dried blood on his forearms. He is resting his head onto the old woman’s shoulder because it looks like he’s been through hell itself.
She is helping him drink his Coke with a straw.
“Thank you, Judy,” he says between sips.
                                                              She just pats his head.
On the other side of the dining room is a table of paramedics. They are young, wearing buzz cuts, cargo pants, radios mounted on their shoulders. Their eyes are drooping, the coffee evidently isn’t helping. It looks like they’ve had a long night.
                                                              I eavesdrop on their conversation:
                                                              “What’re you doing for Thanksgiving?”
                                                              “Sleeping,” says the other.
“Yeah, well, I’m just gonna give my kids KFC and go back to bed, I’ve worked two ten-hour shifts. I’m about to start hallucinating.”
These men are modern day saints. You can have your reality TV stars and your social media influencers. Show me an EMT, and I’ll show you the embodiment of all that is good in America.
Meantime, behind me is a young family with several kids. Four boys. Three boys healthy looking. One is not. One child is small and slight, with a colostomy bag. He has another electronic device mounted on his head, just behind the ear. I believe it’s a neuroprosthetic implant for those with hearing problems.
The boy stares at his older brother’s plate and says, “Can I have some of your pancakes, J.D.?”
J.D. rolls his eyes. “You mean, you already finished your pancakes? You pig.”
                                                              “I was hungry, J.D.”
J.D. does something incredible. Although he is a teenager, and although he is at that age where kids are notoriously selfish, the teenage boy relinquishes his pancakes and places them onto his little brother’s plate. J.D. hasn’t even taken a bite of his pancakes yet, and still, he gives them away.
The little boy’s face glows like a landing strip. “Thanks J.D!”
Across from me, I see the elderly woman is now feeding the elderly man. She is administering spoonfuls of grits to his mouth, blowing on them to cool them down, then dabbing his chin with a napkin. Occasionally, she kisses his forehead.
Then, the room fills with a loud beeping sound. Everyone’s heads turn to look at the EMTs, whose radios are squawking and hissing. The paramedics stand. They leave cash on the table. They slam their coffees.
They jog out of the restaurant and we all see them through the windows. Off to save a life. They pile into their vehicles, sound the sirens, and speed toward hell itself.
As it happens, I’m not smart enough to conquer the peg game, but I know a few things. I know that people are beautiful. I know that life is a treat that does not last half as long as we expect. I know that the elderly couple beside me embodies the purest of love known to humans. I know that J.D. is a good brother.
And I know that this Thanksgiving, all EMTs should be granted a pay raise.

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people who annoy me.

Up early to spatchcock the turkey and get it in the brine, this evening I'll drain and rinse and get the rub applied...a solution of butter, Grand Marnier and Traeger orange rub. My wife insists on an oven baked turkey as well just in case mine doesn't work out. We're going to have about 12 over, various family and friends. Should be a good day...there's pie and a nap involved.

Plans are a couple family days with a brunch Friday morning to celebrate my lovely wife's birthday. Her birthday is Saturday so we're hoping once the house clears out we can enjoy some down time and a visit to a new Italian restaurant here in town. Sunday is a gear safari day, I've located a good trade deal on a steel guitar amp in Omaha about a 4.5 hour drive from here. I'll drive up, trade a guitar for the amp and head right back. It will be a long day but I'll end up with a cool amp...it will need to be checked over and I've located a gentleman in Texarkana, TX who specializes in these amps. It's a 35 year Evans amp made for the steel guitar and used by such great players as John Hughey (Conway Twitty, Vince Gill) and Jay Dee Maness (Byrds, Burrito Brothers, Desert Rose Band and numerous recordings and sound tracks).

3f - On many of the later episodes of both The Buck Owens Show and Hee-Haw Don Rich would play a Les Paul or an odd looking Les Paul Recording model. On some of the later Merle Haggard performances Roy Nichols would also play a Les Paulbefore he died. Variety and spice of life, all that I suppose. Here's a clip of Don with the LP Recording, sounding late 60's groovy but still twangy:

My Best Friend has been under the weather with Covid on and off for the past nine weeks. We both graduated in the same HS class of 1973 and we knew each other for years before that. He finally went through a couple of rounds of good drugs and now he's better. Not great but better. He told me that while he was sick he'd spent the time watching videos about Hi-Fi equipment (turntables, DVD players, Receivers...). I asked him how much he was wanting to spend...he told me...and I said "I can fix this issue real quick".

I gave him one of my nicer high end systems (Technics Direct-Drive turntable, Yamaha Receiver amplifier, Onkyo CD/DVD Player, and a pair of Yamaha NS-10M monitors). I said "If you can clear out enough space for it in your Den, I'll give you the stereo cabinet too"...Mrs E would love for me to clear out that space along that wall. Probably over the next couple of weeks we'll get it all squared away for him. It all powers up and works okay, and he'll have fun with a system that I haven't used much in the last 25 years.

                                                                                                  These days I mostly just use the PC if I want to listen to something nice. I can't remember the last time I actually played a CD or DVD (much less a vinyl album). What passes for HiFi for me these days is my Presonus Eris 3.5 Desktop speakers hooked to my PC. Maybe not quite as nice as that pair of Yamaha NS10M speakers I bought new in 1982, but still sound fine to my older ears. Here's some of the old history of the Yamaha NS10 speakers;
                                                                                                  https://hub.yamaha.com/proaudio/recordi ... %20drivers.

If you have some nice speakers hooked to your PC then listening to Fraser Gartshore could be a real treat. Fraser trained as an organist in Scotland but actually speaks several languages. His regular gig is playing organ at church in Germany (for a German congregation). He often makes two videos of his performances. In one video he'll talk us through it in English, and in the other he speak German. So if you also happen to speak German you could watch one of those videos as well.

Mrs E is downstairs prepping things for tomorrow and I'm smelling all of the fun goodies she's making.
