Global warming brings positive and negative influence to Tibetan plateau

"Under the condition of global warming, the warming speed of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is faster than other places of the world," said Sun Honglie, the academician of China Academy of Science (CAS), "melting of glacier and frozen earth brings positive and negative influence to the entironment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau."

Sun Honglie delivered the above speech to Raidi, deputy director of the National Standing Committee who was investigating in Tibet. Not long before, an investigation team of 19 academicians and researchers from CAS launched a spot reviewing for the east Rongbuk Glacier and Nagqu Pengcuo Glacier. Sun said that this scientific investigation was for studying how to slow the negative influence of global warming to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Sun Honglie said:" We can't alter the climate change, but we try our best to give scientific suggestions to the local development."

Sun introduced that under the condition of global warming, melting of glacier and frozen earth also brings positive influence to Tibetan plateau. The positive thing is temporary better entironment. But there is still negative influence for a long term as rapid melting of glacier will bring plenty of snow water and it may make some lakes burst and grassland around the lakes may be flooded. One of their aims of this trip is to study how to strengthen the warming system of lake flood and investigate the potential threaten in advance.

"Frozen earth melting will also make problems such as water level dropping. It may lead the degradation of grassland," said Sun Honglie.

The CAS Experts' Group for the Tibet Development & Consultative Committee has launched six consultations for the environmental protection and economic development in Tibet and the group will keep on investigating on this problem in the future.
