Sichuan Brief Sichuan Province (Shu for short) is located in southwest China, covering an area of 485,000 square kilometers, and with a population of 94.5 million. Sichuan benifits from its geography and is endowed with rich natural resources such as hydro - power, minerals, plants and wild animals and tourist interest. With is unrivalled hydro - power resources, the province has a reserve of 140 million kw to be developed, ranking first place in China. Of its large varieties of minerals,132 have been verified. The reserves of 11 minerals including vanadium, titanium, lithium, silver and pyrite take the leading place in the country. One of China's three major forestry regions and five major pastoral areas, the province has one - third of higher plant species found in China and about 40% of the country's vertebrates. It is the native place of Giant Panda, the national treasure. There are 31 cities of cultural and historical interest of State and provincial levels, 53 tourist areas and scenic spots, and 307 historical and cultural sites under government protection. The picturesque Jiuzhaigou - HuangLong scenic spot has been listed as a world natural heritage and the Mt. Emei - Leshan Giant Stone Buddha Mitreya tourist area both as a world natural heritage and a human cultral heritage.
Railway plays major role in Sichuan's transport, while there are convenient highway and inland - water communications. The major railways are Chengu - Xi'an railway, the Chengdu - Chongqing railway the Chengdu - Kunming railway, and the Chengdu - Nanchong - Daxian railway, these railways connect moft of the major cities in Sichuan together, and have played a great role in the developement of local economy and prosperity. In the new century, the central government of China has initiated a grand project to banance the develipment of China's economy: Developing the west of China. Sichuan, located in the west, will surely benifit from it. |
