Major visits in Sichuan

Mosuo people and its Matriarchy

Around the Lugu Lake between Sichuan and Yunnan, in Western China there live seven thousand Mosuo people who still keeps a special way of organizing their families, having love affairs and marriage. They have an unique point of view towards the nature, the world and human beings. The women dominate family affairs and the future of the family belongs to female children. In this area where everything is dominated by women, there is no patriarchy and the female and male are equal on condition that women are masters of the family. They practice preliminary and simple marriage system that is called Axia visiting - marriage (actually no marriage system at all). In their families there are no lawful fathers, so it is regarded as living fossil for the study of the development of the human being society or called the Lugu Lake Women - dominating kingdom.

There is no lawfully registered marriage system or patriarchy clan relatives around the Lugu Lake. Here women are the center of the family and men or women don't get married. They are free to choose their own lovers. The man and woman who love each other are called Axia. They never get married and live in their own families. At night the man pays a visit to the woman and spend the night together for making love and having children, which is called "Axia visiting marriage". Such "marriage custom" avoids a lot of trouble in a family, such as contradictions between husband and wife, between sisters and sisters-in-law, between daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law. There is no quarrels or even fights about property, which commonly exists in a patriarchal family. In such marriage costume there is no sexual troubles or crimes. No female babies are given up. No children or women are sold by swindling. Thus the Mosuo people usually have harmony families, the old are taken good care of and the young are well brought up. The Mosuo people don't care at all whether they have boys or girls. Many good traditions of human civilization have been carried forward in the matriarchal families which practice visiting - marriage. They have deep influence on the other ethnic groups around. Such matriarchal family structure enables the Mosuo people to enjoy real freedom and independent rights of marriage, sexual love and giving birth. The natural increase rate of population is only 0.78%, the lowest in the world, lower than in any other country or region of the world.

Above all, the Mosuo people in the women - dominating community have been carrying forward their living costume and concept of value by fighting against the ultra - left policy. In the past 50 years they have fought against the policy of monogyny, which was forced on them. They succeeded in keeping their matriarchal families and visiting-marriage system.

Recently motor boats or ships are forbidden on the Lugu Lake, as is called the cradle of Mosuo people so that the lake might not be polluted at all and it remain an unmatched pure virgin lake in China. Advanced experiences in protecting environment and productive technology are introduced so as to make the local people well-off and wealthy. It is moral excellence and also the common wealth of human society. The Mosuo community was given the title of "model community" at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. Now the Lugu Lake is listed in the tourist areas of the provincial level.

The Mosuo matriarchal relationship between male and female and the society model around the Lugu Lake reflect the great and unselfish maternal love. It is the source of the traditional moral excellence of the Mosuo community. Humanitarianism and human rights are found and in full swing in this community. The matriarchal families provide us with much that we can make use of in solving the problems in modern world. It is also an inspiration to us about the marriage and family in the future. If we make a study about interpersonal relations and sexual partners in the Mosuo community, it will show profound great significance in recognizing women, promoting the equality of women and men.
