Major visits in Sichuan

Sanxindui museum

Situated in the northeast of Chengdu Plain, Guanghan City, also known as Luo County in ancient times, is now a famous historical and cultural city. Sanxingdui, an important cultural relics protection unit, also a AAAA grade scenic spot, is located here. The cultural relics protection units in Sichuan include: the mural of Ming Dynasty in Longju Temple, the Fanghu Park, the peachblossom of Songlin, the Jinyan Lake, the Wenmiao Temple, the sago cycas of Changle Temple and the sinkgo in Rensheng Palace.

Sanxingdui: With a long history, Sanxingdui is situated on the alluvial fan of the Tuo River on the north of Chengdu plain, and in adjacent to the branch of Tuo - Qian River ( it is called Duck River by local people). It is originated from the Mount Chaping in the north of Mount Min, where it is said that the King of the ancient Shu Kingdom hunted for fun. It is said that the Jade Emporer scattered three handful of soil from the heaven, which fell on the bank of Qian River in Guanghan and became three hillocks just like three gold stars on a straight line, so came the name Sanxingdui ( three - star hillocks in Chinese). On the opposite side of the Sanxingdui across the river is an arc-shape mesa named Moon Bay. The Moon Bay is extraordinarily quiet and mysterious in the moonlight. Thus came the famous scene three stars and a Poluo tree in the moonlight, one of the eight famous scenes in Hanzhou. The solid body of Sanxingdui has been laid flat in the 70 - 80s when bricks making became a social upsurge. Only a half of the hillock was preserved when two sacrifices was found and the excavation stopped.

The Sanxingdui site is situated in Nanxing Town, western Guanghan, coving an area of 12 square meters. Having a total area of 12 square km, the Sangxingdui site is, so far, the widest in its scope, longest in time and the richest in cultural connotations of all the ancient Shu cultural remains. The relic was discovered by chance. But the excavation and the study of the relic has lasted for 10 years. In the spring of 1929, a local farmer named Yan Daocheng discovered some precious jade and stone objects while dredging a ditch beside his house. The rich local flavor of these objects aroused attention in various circles. In 1933, Gaway Hann, an American professor of the former Huaxi University and his assistant Ling Mingjun excavated Sanxingdui for the first time. The excavation was highly praised by Mr. Guo Moruo residing in Japan at that time. This is the beginning of the difficult experience of more than half a century's research into the history of the ancient Shu Kingdom. Large - scale arch - aeological excavations since the 80s, have firmly proved that Sanxingdui was a highly developed ancient town and kingdom in southwest China. Sanxingdui culture dates from about 4800 to 2800 years ago, during the period from the late phase of the Neolithic period to the late phase of the Shang dynasty and the early phase of the Zhou dynasty. Sanxingdui Museum deserves its title of world cutural heritage for its great influence and precious archaeological value. The discovery of the Sanxingdui unveils the ancient Shu Kingdom of the Western Sichuan Plain, pushes the history of the Shu Kingdom ahead of over 2000 years and supplies a gap for the Chinese archeology, the history of bronze culture and bronze art. The Sandingdui, one of the 9 miracles of the world was preclained an important unit for cultural relic protection by the State Department in January, 1998.

Sanxingdui Museum is situated at northeast Sanxingdui site by the Duck River, 40 kilometers away from the Capital city Chengdu and 26 kilometers from the new industrial city Deyang. It was opened to the public in October 1997, with the central exhibition area of 7000 square meters. It is now a large modern historical museum. There are 4 different exhibition halls inside the museum with an exhibition line of 800m and covers an area of 4,000 Sq.m. The main contents displayed are the "Ancient Town. Ancient Kingdom. Ancient Shu Culture". The Sanxingdui Site and thousand of cultural relics of Shang Dynasty unearthed from which such as earthenwares, jade articles, bone articles, gold plates and bronze wares are displayed. The cultural relics of the Sandingdui are the most influential, the most valuable and the most fascinating relics among the tremendous amount of cultural relics of China. The exhibition has many breakthroughs and novelties in terms of content and art forms in order to exhibit the large quantity of cultural treasures of Sanxingdui at this mysterious and dreamy art palace.

Sanxingdui is the earliest and largest ancient Shu culture so far. The Sanxingdui Museum, a modern museum built on the Sanxingdui Relics with a spiral structure covers an area of 100,000 square meters. Thousands of unearthed cultural relics of the Shang Dynasty are displayed there, among which the most spectacular are the bronze mask, the bronze magic tree and the golden stick. The exhibition composes of 4 units including the 3 Stars Accompanying the Moon, the Kingdom of the Thearchy and the Shu Spirit, vividly presenting the production, the life, the sacrifice ceremonies and the ceremony of praying to gods of the ancient Shu.

In 1929, a farmer of Guanghan found a pit of exquisite precious stones, awaking the Sanxingdui culture asleep for thousands of years. In July and August 1986, the discovery of two large sacrifice pits of Shang Dynasty and thousands of unearthed rare cultural relics stirred the world. Some of the human-like figures, such as the huge bronze mask with high nose and deep eyes, wide mouth and big ears and surreptitious expression, the real-sized bronze human - head statue, the standing bronze figure with a height of 260cm and a weight of over 150 kilogrammes, the 142cm - long golden stick, the 395cm - hight bronze magic tree decorated with birds and beasts and various kinds of fruits, the ceramic cups and the bronze wares with rich cultural characteristics of foreign lands discovered at Sanxingdui differ totally with any other cultural relics of the Central China as we know well. Many of the relics have been displayed in many coutries in the world. Some of the foreign medias think that the Sanxingdui is more extraordinary than the Terra - cotta warriors and they even imagine that the Sanxingdui is a masterpiece created by the extraterrestrial beings. Sanxingdui is the most splended capital of the ancient people covering an area of 3,5 million. Only 50 % of it has been excavated so far. Countless enigmas on the origin of the Shu Kingdom and the cultural and civilization origin of Sanxingdui remain unveiled.
