Farmland Circling Festival Farmland circling Festival is a very local festival in Tibetan area, it has, till now, has a history over 2500 years, and it always happend 1 -- 3 dyas before the harvest. The local people call it “Wang -- guo festival”. In Tibetan language, “Wang” means “Farmland”, “Guo” means “Circling or walking around, ” hence, “Wang --guo festival”means a festival to circling the farmland praying for crops harvest. At early time, the local productivity was very primitive and backward, and the people at that time believed in Bon religion (a Pantheism), so in order to overcome the difficulties people faced and wish a good harvest, the Bon master would lead people, dressed up in grand style, holding or co -- shouldering A Statue, ears of grains, to circle the farmland in hope of a harvest. Later, when Buddhism got roots in Tibet highland, it accepted the ritals of Bon religion. (in fact, the rituals you see in today's Buddhism ceremonies and celebrations are rooted from Bon religion), From the 15th century, after Gelu -- pa gradually sprung up in snowland and got the rules over Tibet, the “Wang -- guo festival” became a relatively fixed festival in Tibet. After the parade around the farmlands, the locals would gather at the river side or in the woods to enjoy themselves, in someplaces, people would hold grand show of local operas to entertain themselves. After the relaxing and happy time, people would engage in crop harvesting. |
