Samye monastery

Samye, 50km to the east of Lhasa airport, was the first monastery in Tibet, it was built during 774 - 779 with the support of King Tsisong drezan (son of Tang princess).

The shape of it followed a temple in India, and it consists mainly 7 parts - the Wutse at the centre, which meant the centre of the world; the sun chamber to the south, the moon chamber to the north; and 4 giant pagodas with red, white, green and black colors seperately), at the outer range is a long and round wall which made a fence around the monastery. The wall here in Buddhism meaning meant the far eadge of the universe.

This monastery was the work of joint working between Tibetan, Chinses Han, and Indian artcrafts men. And this monastery was made up of 3 floors, the first repesents the Tibetan stule, the seconf represents the Hans style, the third floor has the Indian style .so on different floors, it will present you different feeling to the art of arctecture long ago.

By the entrance to the Wutse are two stone elephants made of white marble, and a bronze made bell hanging the cross beam, it was said by history that that bell was made in the middle 8 century, till now it is over 1250 years old.

After Samye was built, in order t o show his respect to Pangdama Samgbawa (the founder of this monastery, and also the foundr of Ningmapa sect ), he set a rule - 7 local family feeding and clothing one Monk, at the first days of the monastery, 7 children from royal families gave up laymen life and became the first 7 Lhamas (monks) in Tibet history.

The constrution of Samye meant a complete and systematic set of monastic regulation was created, the Buddhism began to get roots deep into the snow land, and gradually was deeply involved into religious and political struggles. Why said so, because before the Samye, the local belief - Bonism had thoughout influence over the daily life of local people and the royal family, they enjoyed high respect and social status, the coming of outer Buddhism gamaged and gradully destroyed their basis and interests, this was the reason why Lhangdamo murdered his brother and why the powerful Tubo dynasty collapsed in middle of 9th century.
