Ganden monastery

Ganden monastery is one the 6 huge monasteries to Gelu - pa order, it was first built in 1409 by Chonkhaba, founder of Gelu - pa order. But the building complex in it had been wiped off in the Cuiltural Revolution in 1970s, on the call of Panchan Lhama, this damaged monastery was rebuilt in 1980s.

Ganden monastery was also the first monastery to Gelu - pa, from then on, Gelu - pa held a permanent place to preach its teaching and enroll students. The finish of construction was marked to the symbolic sign to tell the rise of Gelu pa our of the struggle of religion. Before this time, Chongkaba gent around to preeach his teaching and tried his best to save Buddhism from extinction.

Chongkaba was also called the religious renovator, he succeeded, and formed his own systematic religious theory, and founded the famous Gelu pa order. In 1419, after he supervised the construction of Sera monastery, he passed in Ganden monastery, and his remains were kept in it, and worshipped by pilgrims. But unfortunately, his remains was damaged in 1070s.

The top leader of Ganden monastery was called Ganden chiba (his social position is equivanent to Pope), to be the Ganden chiba means to be the No.1 over Gelu - pa.

The set number of Lhamas in the past was 3300. But in fact the number once reached 4000.
