Hill of medicine master

At the southwest front of the Potala palace is the nick named Hill of medicine master. It is very close to Potala palace, between Hill of medicine master and the Potala is a road, this road just cuts through the small mountain, in the middle of the road is a giant white pogoda, there is a iron chain linking the two hills together. It was said that long ago the two hills was one integrity, but in the middle of 8th century, the wife of the Tibetan king, the second Tang princess, ordered to cut it open, because her baby was stolen by the king's Tibetan wife, for the Tibetan wife, at that time couldn't have baby, she was afraid of losing her royal position in royal family. But later this yong baby for some reason, recognized his real mum - the Tang princess. So in order to celebrate the thing and to thank Buddha, she ordered to link the two cut - open hills together, this is way there is a iron chain hanging in the air between the two hills.

At the south eadge of the hill are a lot of rock carvings on the hill. Now you can see many frescoes on it, and piles of mani stones, every year, at the Sakadawa festival, crowds of pilgrims will come here to put mani stone by the hill, hence the mani piles and mani wall.

Before 17th century, there was a nunery on the hill, but when Sngjiejiatso took the power from Fifth Dalha lama, he ordered to move away the nunery and build a college on it to do research and develope Tibetan medicine. Because of his unconquerable will and powerful support, the theory and basis of Tibetan medicine and therapy were founded. In 1913, the 13th Dalha lama founded a medical organ - Mentsekhang on this hill.
