Tashilunpo monastery

Tashilunpo monastery, located in Shigatse city 280km to the west of Lhasa city (by paved road), is the biggest monastery in the rear Tibet and also the pernanent residence for Panchan Lhama (his position is the same as Dalha Lhama in religion). The elevation of the monastery and the city is 3820m.

This monastery was originally built in 1447 by the first Dalhai Lhama (his name is Ghendunzhuba, one of the 8 disciples of Chongkhaba), with a land occupation over 300,000 squre metres, it is also one the 6 biggest monasteries which belong to Gelu - pa sect. Also one the several monasteries kept intact in the 1970s' cultural revolution. Before 1959, the top authority over the rear Tibet was located in this monastery.

The monastery in fact long ago acted as the capital of the Rear Tibet, so it consists several parts: the palace for Panchan Lhama, the place for local top authority, the stupa chambers for keeping the passed Panchan Lhama, and the educational colleges. The most famous building and statue in the pigrims' heart is the chamber of Mitriya Budha and the 30 - metre tall statue of Mitriya. This giant Buddha statue was cast by the 9th Panchan Lhama in 1914, exhausting 115,000 kelograms of copper.

From the 4th Panchan Lhama on, the monastery became the permanent residence for Panchan Lhama reincarnation system.

In 1791, Tashilunpo monastery was heavily damaged by Khuerkha soldiers (Nepal Soldiers).

The newest stupa was made in 1989 for the tenth Panchan Lhama.
